The Microprocessor Unit (MPU) is the engine of modern embedded systems. Logically, it is an integrated circuit that houses all the functions of a Central Processing Unit (CPU). It executes instructions, processes data, and orchestrates the entire system.
Unlike Microcontrollers (MCUs), MPUs typically lack large on-chip memory (RAM or Flash). Think of an MPU as a “high-performance engine” that requires an external “fuel tank” (external memory and storage) to operate. This architecture allows for significantly higher computing power.
